Uganda’s healthcare performance is ranked 186th out of 191 nations by the World Health Organization (WHO). According to the WHO report, sub-Saharan Africa has 24% of the global disease burden but only 3% of the healthcare workforce worldwide and 1% of the global health expenditure. Doctors and nurses generally stay in urban areas where pay and living conditions are better.
Women in labor are turned away from Ugandan health clinics if they do not have a plastic sheet on which to give birth. Those forced to leave the clinics give birth on the side of the road or at home, in unsanitary conditions.
As part of their focus on improving healthcare in Uganda, Think Humanity run Health Days to offer support to rural and refugee communities. Our birthing kits are one of the items distributed, free of charge, to pregnant women, to reduce the chance of infection during the birthing process, and improve outcomes for both mothers and babies.
